Arkansas's Aurelija
Miseviciute (left) upset No.1 seed Megan Falcon of
LSU, while freshman Ellah Nze of Duke (right) sent
home the No.2 seed, Susie Babos from California.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No.1 seed and
defending NCAA singles champion Somdev Devvarman
from Virginia notched two victories in singles
Friday to advance to tomorrow's semifinals at the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National
Indoor Championships. This event, the second of
three national championships for singles and doubles
this 2007-08 collegiate tennis season, is being
hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet
Club of Columbus.
Devvarman beat Drake's Dalibor
Pavic 6-4, 6-3 in tonight's quarterfinals of men's
singles. Earlier in the day, he topped Penn State's
Michael James, 6-4, 6-4 in a round of 16 match-up.
Devvarman, who also won the NCAA title last May, is
the only remaining seed on the men's side. His
semifinal opponent will be freshman Alex Clayton
from Stanford, who beat Florida's No.4 seed Greg
Ouellette 6-3, 6-4 tonight. Clayton is the first
Stanford player to reach the semifinals since Alex
Kim in 2001; Stanford leads all schools with three
Indoor singles champions, with the last one being
Kim in '01.
Illinois' Ryan Rowe had two
hard-fought wins today, to make his first national
semifinal appearance. He opened the day beating
Albert Larregola from Virginia Tech, 6-7(0), 6-2,
6-2, then topped Daniel Vallverdu from Miami 7-5,
6-4. Rowe is looking to become first University of
Illinois finalist since Amer Delic in 2002. His
opponent will be Denver's Adam Holmstrom, who
registered wins over Richard Wire from Stanford and
Oleksandr Nedovyesov from Oklahoma State, to become
Denver's first national semifinalist.
On the women's side, both of
the top seeds fell today. No.1 seed Megan Falcon
from LSU lost to Arkansas's Aurelija Miseviciute in
the quarterfinals tonight, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
Miseviciute, a junior who reached the quarterfinals
at the Riviera All-American tournament this October,
will be making her first national semifinal
appearance. Her opponent will be Baylor's Taylor
Ormond, who beat No.7 seed Amanda McDowell from
Georgia Tech in the quarters, 6-4, 2-6, 6-0. Ormond,
along with Duke's Ellah Nze, becomes the first
freshman to reach the semifinals since Cal's Susie
Babos did it in 2005. In a twist of fate, No.2 seed
Babos fell in the quarterfinals today to Nze, 6-2,
6-2. Nze, playing her first National Indoor
Championships, upset two top seeds today. In the
round of 16, she beat No.5 seed Zuzana Zemenova from
Baylor, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. She will face off against
Clemson's Ani Mijacika, the No.3 seed, who beat
Georgia Tech's Kristi Miller in the quarterfinals,
6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Mijacika is in her second straight
national semifinal so far this year; she reached the
finals of the Riviera All-American tournament in
October.
Saturday's men's doubles
finals will feature only one seeded team. No.1 seeds
Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey will face UNC's
Taylor Fogelman and Chris Kearney, while Robert
Farah and Kaes Van't Hof from USC will take on
Texas's Kellen Damico and Luis Diaz Barriga. The
women's semis feature four unseeded duos; Romy Farah
and Caren Seenuth from Miami will play against Lenka
Broosova and Zuzana Zemenova from Baylor, while
TCU's Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska will take on
Notre Dame's Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft.
Doubles semifinals take place
starting at noon on Saturday. The singles semifinals
are at 11 a.m. Admission is free.
The tournament can be followed
on the ITA official website and on
thebraingame.net, which will be broadcasting
live streaming video and interviews on Saturday and
Sunday.
